15 December

“How’d we find this place, anyway?” Katrina trailed her SENTINELS teammates out of Waleed’s teleportal and into a decommissioned train depot in southern Poland.

“Every time I searched for the Tribe’s base using the MDA, the location bounced around the globe,” Ericka said.

Laura picked up the thread. “All our information pointed to dark spots. Places where there should be something, but something was blocking our scanners. So I created an algorithm to monitor that and find the source. And here we are.”

Waleed studied the depot. It was dusty and cobwebby but otherwise tidy. “I’m not sure about this place. I mean, if the Tribe was here, it must have been a while ago. Don’t they use that warship? What’s this train depot thing all about?”

“I think this is an old hideout of theirs,” Laura said.

“If that’s the case, maybe they’ve left something behind that will help us find them. Or maybe even George.” Ericka scanned the room.

Waleed pushed a cobweb out of the way and moved toward one end of the depot.

“Don’t move!” Emilio put his arm out to block his teammate.

“What? Why?” Waleed looked from side to side.

“It was about to be your last step.” Emilio pointed to a brick on the ground that was far darker the others. He stepped on it and leapt to the side. Poisoned darts shot through the corridor and slammed into the wall.

“That was lucky,” Waleed said.

“Was that trap set for us or just anybody who wound up here and didn’t belong?” Ericka asked as they inched forward through the depot.

“Knowing Pierce, probably the latter,” Emilio said.

“Uh oh.” Katrina pointed to a burgundy door that had just materialized in front of her.

“Get back!” Emilio shouted. His teammates were doing just that when the door opened and Pierce walked through.

“Well, look who we’ve got here. I wondered who was stupid enough to come crawling through one of my old bases.” Pierce telekinetically levitated his body and ignited a flame around him. “This is going to be fun.”

Ericka’s hands glowed green as she powered up. She nodded at Katrina, who psychokinetically lifted an empty train car and threw it at Pierce. He merely waved his hand and blocked the attack before lowering himself back to the floor.

Laura pulled her handgun—something she carried while on missions with the SENTINELS but was not permitted to use on New Atlantis—out of her holster and fired shots at Pierce, whose force field deflected the bullets. Out of bullets, frowning and dejected, she stood off to the side watching the battle.

Emilio ran at Pierce. Using Mod strength, Pierce grabbed the train car with his left hand and lifted it above his head. A broken handrail fell off the train car. Emilio slid between Pierce’s legs, snagged it, and swung wildly at Pierce’s back. But the handrail bounced off the force field. Emilio’s hands clanged from the vibrations. Eyes wide at the surprise impact, Emilio dropped it and shook his hands out.

Ericka took advantage of distraction and sent her green blasts
